Scouting the Tribe
William and Mary enters the weekend at 1-3 overall, with all three losses coming to teams that made the NCAA Tournament last fall and are favored to return. The Tribe has played extremely tough in all four matches, including a 3-1 victory over MAAC favorite Fairfield, and has several players putting up solid numbers in the early part of the season. Senior captain Molly Krull (Raleigh, N.C.) is averaging just over seven assists per set, and is also hitting .346 on the attack. Freshman middle Carolyn Albright (Raleigh, N.C.) has also been impressive at the start of her career, hitting a robust .317 and averaging a team-leading 1.0 blocks per set.
Scouting the Camels
Campbell is 2-2 on the year, with five-set win over East Carolina and a sweep of Bethune-Cookman to its credit. Jessica Groen is the top offensive weapon for the Camels, with 2.79 kills per set, but teammate Lindsey Coats is nearly as effective on defensive, with 1.57 blocks per set.
Scouting the Hoyas
Georgetown comes into the weekend with a perfect 2-0 ledger, sweeping American and George Mason at the DC Classic last week. Four Hoyas were named to the all-tournament team, led by the MVP award of sophomore Alex Johnson. Johnson leads the team with 4.17 kills per set, and Haley Lowrance is providing 3.33 digs per set on defense.
Scouting the Jaspers
Manhattan is 1-2 on the year so far, picking up a win over La Salle last weekend at the Explorer's own tournament. Three players are averaging over 3.0 points per set for the Jaspers, led by Ellie Wiekamp, while Kelsey Huntoon is the defensive dynamo with 5.55 digs per set.
The Series
-W&M and Georgetown have met 16 times before since 1975, with the Hoyas holding a 10-6 advantage. The last meeting, in Washington during the 2010 season, saw the Tribe come back from an 0-2 deficit to win the last three sets and take the match 3-2.
-W&M and Campbell have only met once before, in this tournament back in 2010. The Tribe won that match 3-1.
-Manhattan is a brand new opponent for the College.
News and Notes
- Senior Shaylin O'Connell was named to the all-tournament team at the Duke Invitational last weekend, after averaging 2.50 points per set and playing every set in the middle for the Tribe. The Leesburg, Va. native collected more than two kills per set and 0.82 blocks per set in the Tribe's three matches in Durham.
- It's entirely coincedental, but W&M will play in both Durham, North Carolina, and Durham, New Hampshire this season. The Tribe opened the year at the Duke Invitational, and will travel to New Hampshire next weekend for the Holly Young Invitational.
- W&M's recruiting class earned mention from PrepVolleyball.com for the third year in a row this summer, and was one of the five best classes mentioned in the region.
- Senior Molly Krull spent the summer in Budapest, Hungary, on a study abroad program through W&M's School of Business.
- Junior Julia Swalchick also spent her summer overseas, studying environmental science in Iceland. Swalchick was also the volleyball team's representative in this year's "Touting the Tribe" video series.
