The William and Mary volleyball team hosts its second tournament of the season this weekend, welcoming three teams to Kaplan Arena for six matches on Friday and Saturday in the Colonial Challenge. The Tribe will take on Elon Friday night at 7 p.m., with matches against Howard (at 10 a.m.) and Hampton (7 p.m.) following on Saturday.

Scouting the Tribe
William and Mary enters the weekend at 5-5 after winning two of three at the New Hampshire Invitational last weekend and tying for the tournament title. Redshirt-sophomore Paulette Grand Pre (Laguna Beach, Va.) is leading the team with 2.55 kills per set, and ranks second at 3.16 digs per set. Senior Shaylin O'Connell (Leesburg, Va.) has played in every set so far this year, and is averaging 1.98 kills and 1.05 blocks per set after scoring her first career double-double in the win over New Hampshire (10 kills, 10 blocks).
Scouting the Phoenix
Elon is 5-7 on the year after a loss to High Point on Tuesday night. Megan Gravley is leading the offense at 2.85 kills pet set, while Celia Rose eddy is the defensive stopper at 0.84 blocks per set.
Scouting the Bison
Howard comes to Williamsburg still searching for its first victory at 0-8 overall. Meagan Lagerlef is averaging 1.76 kills per set to lead the Bison attack, while on defense Jasmine Tipton is providing 3.28 digs per set.
Scouting the Pirates
Hampton is 6-7 on the year so far, including a 3-2 win over Elon in the season-opener and a narrow 3-2 loss to Baylor last weekend. Vendula Strakova is hitting a robust 4.82 kills per set, and on the other side of the net, Mariah Baylor has 0.94 blocks per set.
The Series
- W&M has won both of its previous meetings with Elon by a 3-1 score, in 2005 and again in 2008. The two teams have only ever met in Williamsburg and only during a Tribe tournament.
- The College and Howard were regular opponents in the early 1980's, but have met only once since 1985 and that was in 1998. W&M has a 5-3 edge in the series, winning each of the last three by a 3-0 count.
- The Tribe owns a perfect 18-0 ledger against Hampton, but the teams haven't met since 2010.

- Tribe newcomer Dessi Koleva became the second freshman in as many weeks to be named the CAA Rookie of the Week on Sept. 10, following her steady performance at the New Hampshire Invitational. Koleva averaged 2.08 kills and 2.25 digs per set in the Tribe's three matches, including outs of 12 digs against Holy Cross and 12 kills (while hitting .421) against New Hampshire.
- Following her strong effort at the Tribe Invitational, freshman middle Carolyn Albright was named the CAA's Rookie of the Week on Sept. 3. The Raleigh, N.C., native averaged 1.86 kills and 0.86 blocks per set in the Tribe's four matches, including a 10-kill, four-block night against Liberty on Aug. 28.
- Each of the Tribe's first three victories came by a 3-1 count, the first time that each of the first three wins have seen the same score since 2000. That season, W&M's first four wins all came by a 3-0 count.
- For the second week in a row, the Tribe had two players named to the all-tournament team at New Hampshire. Paulette Grand Pre and Manon Murray were recognized for their efforts on the weekend, which included three double-doubles. Grand Pre averaged 2.46 kills and 3.0 digs per set, with a double-double of 12k-16d in the 3-2 victory over New Hampshire. She also hit .500 with nine kills and no errors against Holy Cross. For her part, Murray had 18 kills and 16 digs against Central Connecticut State, and another double-double of 11 kills and 13 digs against New Hampshire. Murray also had four aces against the Wildcats, the sixth-most ever in a five-set match, and averaged 2.77 kills and 2.85 digs per set.
- W&M had two players named to all-tournament team at the Tribe Invitational, with Paulette Grand Pre and Shaylin O'Connell taking their spots among the tournament's six best players. Grand Pre tied for fourth among all players with 0.33 aces per set, and also ranked sixth in kills, points, and digs per set. O'Connell earned her second all-tournament nod of the season after ranking second on the weekend with 1.33 blocks per set, and third with a .448 attack percentage.
- Shaylin O'Connell was also named to the all-tournament team at the Duke Invitational on the opening weekend, after averaging 2.50 points per set and playing every set in the middle for the Tribe. The Leesburg, Va. native collected more than two kills per set and 0.82 blocks per set in the Tribe's three matches in Durham.
- It's entirely coincedental, but W&M played in both Durham, North Carolina, and Durham, New Hampshire this season.
- W&M's recruiting class earned mention from PrepVolleyball.com for the third year in a row this summer, and was one of the five best classes mentioned in the region.
- Senior Molly Krull spent the summer in Budapest, Hungary, on a study abroad program through W&M's School of Business.
- Junior Julia Swalchick also spent her summer overseas, studying environmental science in Iceland. Swalchick was also the volleyball team's representative in this year's "Touting the Tribe" video series.
