William and Mary senior Shaylin O'Connell (Leesburg, Va.) was named the Defensive Player of the Week by the Colonial Athletic Association, after leading the Tribe volleyball team to a perfect 2-0 record on Homecoming Weekend. This is the first award of the season for O'Connell, and fifth overall for the Tribe.
O'Connell averaged 3.62 kills, 1.25 blocks, and 4.25 points per set over the weekend, leading the Tribe wins over James Madison and George Mason. The senior scored a career-high 20 kills while hitting .400 in the 3-2 victory against the Dukes, and added nine kills against the Patriots as part of the 3-0 sweep. She also had five blocks against both schools. O'Connell is having the best season of her career, setting career-highs in kills, blocks, points, and attack percentage as she's led her team to the cusp of the CAA Tournament.
The Tribe's next match is Friday night, hosting Northeastern at 7 p.m. Before the match, W&M will take a moment to honor its two seniors, O'Connell and Molly Krull (Raleigh, N.C.).
