UNCWs Ninth-Inning Run Clips Tribe, 5-4

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. The William and Mary baseball team fell to UNCW, 5-4, Friday night from Plumeri Park.  In a game that was tied at 4-4 heading into the ninth-inning, the Seahawks scored a run in the frame en route to the victory.  For the year, the College falls to 28-22 overall and 11-15 in CAA play, while UNCW improves to 31-19 on the season and 21-5 in league action.

Senior LHP Cole Shain (4-3) saw five innings of work, allowing two earned runs on seven hits in the no decision.  Junior RHP John Farrell (2-2) took the loss, but was solid in four innings of relief, as he surrendered an earned run on just one hit while striking out six.  UNCW's sophomore LHP Kelly Secrest (3-2) earned the win as he pitched three innings of relief.

At the plate, freshman first baseman Michael Katz went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, two runs scored and a home run to lead W&M.  For Katz, the sixth inning home run was his ninth of the season.  Sophomore designated hitter Devin White finished the night tallying one hit and a run batted in, while junior center fielder Ryan Brown recorded a hit.  

UNCW got on the scoreboard first with a run in the opening frame.  Junior right fielder Tyler Molinaro put the Seahawks ahead, 1-0, after he connected on a home run to right field.

In the top of the fourth, UNCW pushed across a run as it extended its margin to 2-0.

The College responded with a run in the bottom half, cutting the Seahawk lead down to a run.  With one out, Katz got things started with a single to right center field.  After junior shortstop Ryan Williams followed with a walk, UNCW recorded the frame's second out.  With two outs and runners on first and second, White plated Katz with a single to left center field.

W&M went ahead, 4-2, after plating a trio of runs in the bottom of the fifth.  With one out, junior second baseman Kevin Nutter reached base after being plunked by the Wilmington starter. Sophomore third baseman Ryan Lindemuth then reached base on an error by the Wilmington third baseman.  With two outs and runners on first and second, Katz belted a Batts, 1-0, offering over the left center field wall, giving the Green and Gold a 4-2 advantage.

The Seahawks managed to tie the contest up at 4-4 after plating a pair of runs in the top half of the sixth.

With the scored tied at 4-4 heading into the ninth-inning, UNCW scored a run in the top half of the frame as it escaped Plumeri Park with the one run victory.  With two outs, junior second baseman Michael Bass drove in senior shortstop Jake Koenig for the go ahead run.

The College will conclude its series with the Seahawks tomorrow with the Senior Day finale slated to get underway at 2 p.m. from Plumeri Park.   At approximately 1:30 p.m. the W&M baseball program will honor its nine-member senior class with a ceremony.
