WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Redshirt senior John Sheehan tossed a season-long seven innings with a career-high eight strikeouts, helping the William and Mary baseball team to a 14-2 Colonial Athletic Association victory over UNCW on Saturday at Plumeri Park. With the win, the Tribe knots the weekend series at one game apiece. W&M improves to 19-10 overall, and 3-1 in CAA play, while the Seahawks slip to 14-15, 2-2 in league action.

Sophomore Ryan Hissey led the Tribe offense, going 3-for-5 with five RBIs on the day. Junior Nick Thompson, senior Derek Lowe, and freshman Tim Hoehn each collected a pair of hits during the game.

UNCW started the scoring with a run in the top of the third inning. Gavin Stupienksi led off the inning with a single up the middle, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by Josh Abshire. With two outs, Terrance Connelly singled through the left side, scoring Stupienski, and giving the Seahawks a 1-0 lead.

William and Mary responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Thompson led off the inning with a double into right center field, moving to third a stolen base. With one out, Hissey singled into shallow right field, tying the score 1-1. Hissey went on to steal second, coming around to score on single by senior Kevin Casey. Hoehn brought in the final run of the inning with a two-out single to left, giving the Tribe a 3-1 lead.

The Tribe added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out, senior Ryan Lindemuth was hit by a pitch, moving to second and third on a pair of wild pitches. After another out, junior Michael Katz reached on a walk. The following batter, Hissey, belted a three-run homer over the right field wall. Hissey’s first long ball of the season lifted the Tribe to a 6-3 lead.

W&M added five more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Hoehn led off the inning with a solo shot over the left field wall. Lowe and senior Kevin Nutter followed with back-to-back singles. After a fielder’s choice, the Tribe had runners on the corners and one out.  A Thompson walk loaded the bases for the Green and Gold. The Tribe got its second run of the inning, when Katz reached on an error, but was credited with an RBI. With two outs, a Seahawk error allowed three Tribe runs to cross the plate, giving the Green and Gold an 11-1 lead.

The Seahawks added a run in the top of the seventh inning. Louis Renvill and Stupienksi each reached starting the inning. With one out, Casey Golden singled through the left side, cutting the Tribe lead to 11-2.

William and Mary responded with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Lowe, sophomore Josh Smith and Lindemuth all reached, loading the bases. Lowe came around to score a wild pitch. A single by Hissey allowed for Smith to score, and error on the play provided the final run of the inning for the Tribe.

Sheehan tossed seven innings, allowing just two runs on seven hits, while fanning a career-high eight batters. He earned his third win of the season for the College. The loss was charged to UNCW’s Jordan Ramsey, who went five innings allowing six runs. Freshman Nick Brown pitched the final two innings for the Tribe, allowing just two hits, while striking out three.

The Green and Gold scored in double-figures for the 11th time this season. When scoring 10, or more, runs in a game the Tribe is 10-1.
