WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Sophomore Joseph Gaouette tossed a career-long 5.1 innings, combined with a career-high nine strikeouts to help lift the Tribe to a 10-2 victory over UNCW on Sunday afternoon at Plumeri Park. With the win, the Tribe takes the three-game Colonial Athletic Association weekend series two games to one. The Green and Gold improves to 20-10, 4-1 in CAA play, while the Seahawks fall to 14-16, 2-3 in league action.

Junior Nick Thompson led the Tribe offense going 3-for-4, with a home run, three RBIs, and four runs scored. Senior Kevin Nutter, junior Michael Katz, and sophomore Charley Gould each had two-hit ballgames for the Tribe.

The Seahawks jumped on the board in the top of the first inning.  Casey Golden led off the game with a home run over the left field wall, giving UNCW a 1-0 lead.

UNCW added another run in the top of the third inning. Golden led off the frame with a double down the left field line, moving to the third on a balk. After an out, Ryan LaGrange grounded out, but it was enough to score Golden, and gave the Seahawks a 2-0 advantage.

William and Mary answered with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. With one out, Nutter and senior Ryan Lindemuth hit back-to-back singles, starting the rally. The next batter, Thompson singled into center field, scoring Nutter and putting runners on the corners. Katz followed with a walk, loading the bases. After the second out of the inning, Gould singled into left field, scoring two runs and giving the Tribe a 3-2 lead.

The Tribe added another run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Thompson hit his ninth home run of the season to straight away center field, putting the Green and Gold up 4-2.

W&M added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two outs, senior Derek Lowe, Nutter, and Lindemuth all reached loading the bases. Thompson followed with a walk, bringing in a run. Katz then roped a single into right field, scoring Nutter and Lindemuth. A walk to Hissey reloaded the bases for the Tribe. Gould worked a walk, earning RBI, making the score 8-2.

The Green and Gold plated two runs in the bottom of the eighth. With one out, Thompson singled followed by a double from Katz, putting runners on second and third. After an out, Gould singled into right, clearing the bases, and giving W&M a 10-2 lead.

Gaouette and senior Kevin Casey combined to throw the final 6.1 innings out of the Tribe bullpen, allowing only one base runner, and retiring the last 16 UNCW batters in order. Gaouette was credited with his third win of the season, while Nick Monroe of UNCW was charged with his second loss. Casey pitched a scoreless ninth, striking out two.

Today’s 10-runs was the 12th time the College has scored in double-figures this season. They have posted an 11-1 mark in those games. Over the last 10 weekend (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) games the Tribe has scored 125 runs total, which is a mark of 12.5 runs per game.
