W&M Athletics Recognizes 81 Student-Athletes with Provost Award
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (March 16, 2012) - The College of William and Mary's Athletics Department hosted its ninth annual Provost Award reception on Thursday evening (March 15th ) to honor an exceptional group of 81 student-athletes in Kaplan Arena.
The 81 student-athletes represented 19 different Tribe programs. The Provost Award is earned based on achieving a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 GPA, or above.
"Our student-athletes work very hard to be the best that they can be in both the classroom and in competitions," said W&M's director of athletics Terry Driscoll. "I think the fact that the Provost Award is awarded to student-athletes, by student-athletes, makes it even more special. I applaud their initiative and desire to recognize their peers who have achieved excellence in the classroom and on the playing fields"
The event is sponsored by the Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) and was hosted by the College's Provost, Michael Halleran. The program was initiated by the SAAC, which is a group of student representatives from each of W&M's 23 intercollegiate teams.
"Students receiving the Provost Award are remarkable: faring very well in our rigorous W&M curriculum and competing at the highest level of intercollegiate athletics," stated Halleran prior to the event. "It is a pleasure to recognize them with this award."
