W&M Drops CAA Opener at Georgia State

Atlanta, Ga. - The William and Mary men's basketball team dropped its Colonial Athletic Association opener on the road, 66-34, against Georgia State on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers won for the sixth straight time in improving to 6-3 overall, while the Tribe fell to 1-8 on the season.

Sophomore guard Brandon Britt topped the Tribe with eight points, all in the second half, while junior guard Matt Rum added six. Sophomore Tim Rusthoven led W&M with seven rebounds, while senior Kendrix Brown finished with four rebounds and a team-best three assists.

Georgia State opened up a double-digit lead with a 9-0 run in the early stages of the first half. After a James Vincent conventional 3-point play, Jihad Ali and Rashaad Richardson hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Panthers a 16-6 advantage eight minutes into the contest. W&M closed to 16-10 on a 3-pointer from senior Quinn McDowell at the 10:46 mark, but the Panthers took the momentum to the locker room, finishing the half on a 16-3 run.

Britt scored the opening six points of the second half on a 3-pointer and a driving conventional 3-point play to cut the Georgia State lead to 13, 32-19. The margin remained 13 following a McDowell jumper at the 17:18 mark, before the Panthers put the game away with another 16-3 run.

The Tribe finished the game shooting 25.5 percent (12-of-47) from the floor with five 3-pointers, while Georgia State countered with 40.7 percent (24-of-59) from the field to go along with 14-of-21 from the free throw line. Ali led all scorers with 17 points off the Panther bench, while James Fields and Eric Buckner added 12 and 11, respectively.

W&M will have 12 days off during the College's final examination period. The Tribe will return to action on Thursday, Dec. 15, when it hosts Wesley College as part of a men's and women's basketball doubleheader. The Tribe women will face North Carolina A&T at 4:30 p.m., before the men host Wesley at 7 p.m. Fans can catch the action over the Tribe Radio Network with Jay Colley, Bill McDonald and Charlie Woollum on the call. Fans are invited the to the third edition of "The Chesapeake Bank Tony Shaver Show," which will be on Tuesday, Nov. 29, at the Buffalo Wild Wings in New Town (4918 Courthouse Street). The show will be broadcast live on the Tribe's flagship stations - 92.3 FM The Tide and 107.9 Bach FM. The show begins on-site at 6:30 p.m. with the live interview airing from 7-7:30 p.m.
