Tribe Field Hockey Adds Two to Incoming Class

William and Mary head field hockey coach Peel Hawthorne ’80 announced the addition of two more players to the Tribe team today, adding on to the four previously announced signees.  Both women will be traveling from the opposite side of the world to enroll at the College.

Following is a brief look at each newcomer:

Pip Saunders – 5-5 Forward/Midfield
Mittagong, New South Wales, Australia / Bowral High


“Pip is an all-round player, with extremely good footwork, skills, and explosive speed that can quickly turn a defensive situation into attack.  With her joining her fellow NSW teammate Emma Clifton, we are looking forward to seeing them reconnect and create a stronger midfield and forward line for the Tribe.”

At Bowral
Attacker/Midfielder .. Has played hockey since she was five ... Selected to the NSW Institute of Sport Academy every year from 2008-12 ... Named to the NSW U/21 Women's state squad in 2011 ... Member of the NSW U/18 squad in 2009 and 2010 ... Named to the NSW U/16 squad in 2008 ... In 2009, was selected to the Australian Schoolgirls hockey team ... Class Prefect as a senior at Bowral ... Served turns as house captain and vice house captain as a junior ... Also a Peer Support Leader in 2010-11.

Personal
Daughter of Joyce and Terry Saunders ... Full name is Pippin Lea Saunders ... Enjoys outdoor activities, reading, and watching movies ... First indigenous Australian ever to attend W&M … Undecided as to her college major.

Navneet Singh – 5-4 Defender
Auckland, New Zealand / Auckland Diocesan School for Girls


“Navneet is a defender transferring in from Auckland University.  Nav is a fierce competitor who is constantly improving her skills and knowledge of the game.  This is reflected by her list of selections to numerous representative teams at the local and national level.  She will bring depth of experience to our young back field this season.”

At Auckland Diocesan School for Girls
Has been playing hockey since a young age ... Selected to the New Zealand Indians U/23 Women's Hockey Team each of the past two years ... Also selected to the NZI Women's Hockey Team (all ages) in 2009-10 ... Auckland U/18 team won the national championship in 2008-09 ... Selected to the Auckland High Performance Hockey Academy for 2009 ... Part of the Bruce Pullman Sports Scholarship Trust mentoring programme from 2006-08 ... Played for the Howick Pakuranga Premiere One hockey team from 2006-10 ... Named the Club Schoolgirl Player of the Year in 2006 ... Member of the Diocesan Young Enterprise Team, winning several awards ... Auckland Central Company of the Year in 2009 ... Also won the Auckland Oral Presentation Competition that year.

Daughter of Vanita and Harvinder Singh ... Enjoys reading, any sports, and spending time with friends and family ... Came to W&M because of its great academics coupled with a strong hockey programme … Will continue her studies in finance and marketing.
