The William and Mary field hockey team gritted out a 2-1 victory Sunday afternoon against a game Miami squad at Busch Field.  With the win, the Tribe improves to 7-1 for the first time since 2000, while Miami falls to 2-6 on the year.

Box Score

The first half began with the College just inches away from scoring nearly at the whistle, with a shot by Pip Saunders (Mittagong, NSW) just 21 seconds into the contest.  As has become its calling card this season, the Tribe spent the first half peppering the Miami goalkeeper with nine shots and forcing six saves, finally breaking through just before the horn to take the lead.  W&M was awarded its fifth penalty corner of the half in the middle of the 34th minute, and redshirt-sophomore Jesse Ebner (Sinking Spring, Pa.) sent the ball in to start the play.  Redshirt-junior Sarah Morehouse (Burke, Va.) passed the ball over to senior captain Maria Caro (Martinsville, N.J.), and she blasted a shot to the far post and in.  It was her second goal of the weekend and season, and proved to be her second game-winner of the year as well.  For Morehouse, it was her first assist of the fall.

Coming back out of the intermission, it only took about four minutes for the Tribe to go up 2-0.  Another penalty corner was disrupted by the Miami defense, and a collision between two players squirted the ball up and out to the back-side of the play.  Junior Taylor Hodge (Louisville, Ky.) was there, and lofted a high, arching shot that dropped in behind all of the defenders and the goalkeeper, and bounced into the back of the goal.  It was the first goal of the year for Hodge, and third of her career.  Miami responded almost immediately with a tough shot to the back post in the 42nd minute, but the W&M defense clamped down and held on against six shots in the final six minutes to preserve the victory.

Redshirt-freshman Cate Johnson (Charlottesville, Va.) made seven saves (five coming in that final flurry) in picking up her third win of the year.  For the match, the Tribe held a 17-13 advantage in shots (9-5 in the first half) and a 9-5 edge in penalty corners (5-2 before halftime).

After four matches at home, William and Mary hits the road for a pair next weekend as Colonial Athletic Association play gets underway.  The Tribe will first travel to Boston to face No. 7-ranked Northeastern on Friday night, before taking on Hofstra on Sunday afternoon.
