Scouting the Tribe
W&M is 8-2 on the year and 1-1 in the CAA, after splitting a pair of matches last weekend. The Tribe lost to then-No. 8 Northeastern, 3-2 on Friday night, before rebounding with a 1-0 shutout of Hofstra on Sunday. Senior captain Christine Johnson (Williamsburg, Va.) leads the team with 15 points on six goals (also best) and three assists, while sophomore Emma Clifton (Loomberah, NSW) and senior Allison Moran (Wynnewood, Pa.) are tied for second with 11 points apiece and each with four goals and three assists. On defense, fifth-year senior Elizabeth Frey (Virginia Beach, Va.) leads the CAA in shutouts, GAA (0.95), and ranks third in save percentage at .800. Redshirt-freshman Cate Johnson (Charlottesville, Va.) has also been very effective between the pipes, leading the league with an .821 save percentage and ranking fourth with a 1.35 GAA.
Scouting the Blue Hens
Delaware is 4-7 on the year, and will be playing its first conference match on Friday. The Blue Hens are being led by Michaela Patzner, with five goals and an assist, while Sarah Scher has played the majority of time in goal and has a 3.15 GAA and stopping 62% of the shots against her.
Scouting the Spiders
Richmond is 5-3 on the season and winners of its last two against Davidson and Longwood. The Spiders, who were briefly ranked No. 25 earlier this year, are being led by five goals and five assists from Chelsea Davies. In goal, Richmond is splitting time between Kelley Wentling, who has a 1.56 GAA and a 2-2 record, and Anna Zarkoski, who is 3-1 with a 2.85 goals-against average.
The Series
W&M is 7-7 all-time against Delaware, and won the last meeting in Williamsburg 1-0 in 2010. The Blue Hens have won five of the last six, however, including a penalty-stroke decision in 2008. The Tribe will also be looking to reverse a recent trend against the Spiders, who have won three in a row and six of the last eight against W&M. All-time, the College is 33-8-2 against its former conference rival, with the most recent victories coming in 2005 and 2006.
News and Notes
- W&M has opened conference play against Northeastern every year since 2007, a six-year span that is the longest such-streak in school history. The Tribe played Radford four years in a row from 1985-88, and VCU four years as well from 1991-94. The six times playing the Huskies in the conference opener is also second-most overall, behind only the seven times that W&M has taken on VCU.
- By splitting the first conference weekend, the Tribe has opened league play at 1-1 or better 26 times in 28 years. The shutout over Hofstra also improved W&M to 7-2 all-time after losing its conference opener.
- Two more wins will clinch a winning season for the Tribe for the first time since 2006. In the 40 years since 1973, W&M has had a .500 or better record 27 times so far.
- The 1-0 win over Hofstra was the fourth shutout of the year for W&M. The last time the Tribe had four shutouts or more was 2006, when W&M carried six blank-sheets.
- The Tribe's four-match road swing to start the year was the second-longest ever, and it was also the most successful in school history with a 4-0 mark. The longest road trip to start a season is five, shared by the 2002 team which started 1-4 and the 1999 squad's 3-2 mark. The Tribe also began with four matches on the road in 1992 (going 3-1), 1983 (2-2), and 1981 (1-1-2).
- W&M's 5-0 start to the year was the best since the Tribe started with five wins in 2006. The only season-opening win streaks better than five came in 2000, when the Tribe won seven to start the year before going to the NCAA Tournament for the first time; as well as 1978 and 1979. Both of those years began with nine victories, and the 1978 team also had a tie in the 10th game.
- The Tribe swept the CAA weekly awards on Sept. 18, with senior captain Maria Caro sharing Player of the Week honors and redshirt-freshman Cate Johnson being named Rookie of the Week. Caro scored two game-winning goals, against Miami and then-No. 11 Boston University, while Johnson was credited with the win in both matches and stopped 92.9% of the shots made against her.
- Christine Johnson was named the CAA co-Player of the Week on Aug. 28, after scoring four goals and a defensive save to lead her team to a 5-1 win over Davidson. Johnson is the seventh player in school history to score four goals in a single game, and the first since Katie Silverthorne '02 in 2001. She is the first Tribe player to be named the conference Player of the Week since October of 2007.
