William and Mary's Natalie Baird (Sterling, Va.) was named the Colonial Athletic Association's Field Athlete of the Week on Tuesday, after taking over the conference lead in the discus with a strong effort at the Penn Relays last week. She is the second Tribe athlete to earn weekly honors this season, joining two-time Runner of the Week Elaina Balouris (Allison Park, Pa.).
Baird was fourth in the college discus at the Penn Relays last week, throwing a season-best 46.88 meters (153-9). It was the fourth-longest throw in school history for Baird, who also qualified to the ECAC Championships with the performance. Heading into the conference championships this weekend, Baird is seeded first in the discus and second in the shot put.
Baird and the rest of the Tribe head to George Mason this weekend, May 4-5, for the 2012 Colonial Athletic Association Championships. One week later is the IC4A/ECAC Championships at Princeton, and the East Prelims for the NCAA Championships will take place May 25-27, in Jacksonville, Fla. The top 12 athletes at the Prelims will qualify to go on to Des Moines for the NCAA Finals, June 6-9.
