William and Mary senior Elaina Balouris (Allison Park, Pa.) was named the Division I Women's National Runner of the Week by the USTFCCCA on Monday, after winning the two-mile at Richmond over the weekend.  The national athlete of the week program for cross country is in its first season of existence, after the coaches' association began awarding track and field honors last winter.  This is the first national award for the Tribe program.

Balouris was the individual champion at the Spider Alumni Open on Saturday, running 10:17.5 to break the meet record and lead the Tribe to a 16-57 team victory over five other Division I programs.  She won by 0.8 seconds over teammate Emily Stites (Wyoming, Ohio), and both were more than 10 seconds ahead of the third-place finisher.  All three, as well as W&M sophomore Meghan McGovern (North Wales, Pa.), broke the existing meet record of 10:32.5 set by Stites last year.  Balouris' win was the eighth of her career and third in cross country, following trail wins at the W&M Invitational and the CAA Championships last fall.

Balouris and her teammates are back in action in two weeks, hosting the 55th Annual W&M Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 21.  Races in both the high school and college divisions will begin shortly after 8 a.m. at Eastern State Hospital.
