William and Mary senior harrier Elaina Balouris (Allison Park, Pa.) has been named the 2013 Female College Athlete of the Year in the state of Virginia by the Portsmouth Sports Club, and will be honored at their annual Jamboree next Wednesday, Jan. 15.  The 68th annual event will be held at the Renaissance Hotel on the Portsmouth Waterfront, with a social beginning at 6:30 p.m. and a dinner and awards following.  Tickets for the event are on sale, and can be purchased by sending in the attached order form by Jan. 8 (this Wednesday).

Balouris, a four-time All-American for the Tribe cross country and track and field teams, earned a pair of her national honors in 2013.  After a quiet winter in which she earned All-East honors at 3,000m, she began the spring by winning the same race at the Tribe Invitational.  Balouris broke the school record at 5,000m with her runner-up 16:03.43 at the Colonial Relays, and two weeks later ran an NCAA-qualifying 10,000m at the Mt. SAC Relays.  She was an integral part of the Tribe's CAA Championship effort, finishing second in both the 1,500m and 5,000m, and qualified for her second-straight NCAA Finals after running a school-record 33:43.27 for 10,000m in the semifinal round.  In the national championship round, Balouris ran 34:13.53 for 10th place overall, and her second All-American award in that event.

After the summer training period, Balouris picked up right where she left off, winning the first two cross country meets of the year.  She led W&M to the win at the Spider Alumni Open with a course-record 10:17.5, and was named both the CAA and National Runner of the Week for the achievement.  Three weeks later, Balouris again smashed the course record in winning the Panorama Farms Invitational in 16:31.8, and earned her second CAA Runner of the Week award.  At Pre-Nationals she was second on the team at 12th overall and reclaimed the top spot at the CAA Championships, winning her second-consecutive conference title in 21:17.11.  Balouris' performance was also notable in that it led W&M to the first-ever perfect score and 1-5 showing in CAA history.

At the Southeast Regionals, Balouris finished second on the team and sixth overall to make the all-region team for the fourth year in a row, and helped W&M to a program-record 69 points and second-place finish.  It was the first time ever that the Tribe had qualified to the NCAA Championships in consecutive seasons.  On a cold, windy, and muddy nationals course in Indiana, she ran 20:22.7 for 11th place overall, her best-ever finish and the second year in a row that she has finished top-13 and earned All-American honors.  Just to cap things off, Balouris broke another school record with her 9:23.03 win in the 3,000m at the CNU Holiday Open in December, a performance that currently ranks her second in the nation.
