NEWARK, Del. - Former William and Mary women's basketball player Julie (Sommer) Leach (1995-99) was honored as the Tribe's 2007 Colonial Athletic Association Legend at the conference's awards banquet on Wednesday evening in Newark, Del.
One of the College's most prolific scorers, she finished her career with 1,216 points and ranks seventh on the program's career scoring list. Additionally, Leach led the Tribe in scoring all four years, averaging double figures every season. An incredibly accurate shooter, she is the school record holder for career three-point shooting percentage (.380), while she ranks second in career free throw shooting percentage (.785).
In addition to her career marks, she owns the W&M single-season record for free throw percentage, connecting on 85.9 percent of her attempts as a freshman. That figure ranked 15th in the nation that season. En route to earning the impressive mark, she sank a school-record 29 consecutive free throws during an eight-game stretch.
While Leach excelled on the court, the Altoona, Pa., native also distinguished herself in the classroom. In addition to earning CAA Scholar-Athlete accolades, she was selected as an Academic All-American during her senior season.
Formerly Julie Sommer, she is married to former Tribe football standout Mike Leach (1998-2000), who currently plays for the Denver Broncos.
