WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (Jan. 17, 2016)—The William & Mary men's gymnastics team opened its 2016 season with a good showing at the State Open at Kaplan Arena on Sunday afternoon, as four Tribe gymnasts claimed individual event titles.
Junior
Aria Sabbagh led the Tribe by winning the high bar (14.4) title and posting the top all-around score (80.05). The impressive mark on high bar represented a career high and tied for the eighth-best score in school history.
Sophomore
Juan Palma also recorded an outstanding performance in multiple events, as he won the floor title with the fourth-best score in school history (15.1) and tied for third on vault (14.35).
Senior
Keaton Ackerman registered the meet's top mark on pommel horse (13.85) and placed third on high bar (13.2), while senior
Nick Van Dyke tied for first on rings with a career-best 13.6.
Freshman
Jack Hasenkopf made an impressive collegiate debut by finishing second on parallel bars (13.3) and in all-around (77.15). Sophomore
Griffin Antle (13.8) and freshman
David Allen (13.5) also posted second-place efforts on pommel horse and high bar, respectively. Antle's score represents a career high in the event.
A trio of W&M gymnasts notched third-place finishes – senior
Simon Casey (pommel horse, 13.7), senior
Adam Avant (parallel bars, 13.2) and freshman
Peter Makey (rings, 13.4).
The Tribe will return to action in two weeks when it competes at the Navy Open on Jan. 30.
