Women's Soccer Advances to CAA Semifinals With PK Victory at UNCW

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The No. 5-seeded William & Mary women's soccer team used a 5-4 penalty kick victory to advance to the Colonial Athletic Association Semifinals after battling No. 4-seeded UNCW to a 2-2 draw in a league quarterfinal Sunday afternoon. Freshman Sarah Segan and junior Elysse Branton netted goals in regulation. The Tribe's record now sits at 10-7-2, while the Seahawks conclude their year with a 10-5-4 mark.

"I thought we deserved to win in regulation and then overtime," head coach John Daly said. "We played our hearts out, and fully deserve to go through."

William & Mary controlled the early possession and fired four of the first five shots of the match. Following a first minute chance by UNCW's Callie McClain that went wide, the Tribe started its offensive attack. In the ninth minute, senior Haley Kavanaugh fired a shot on frame that was saved by UNCW's Carolyn Huddy. The next two chances came from freshmen Sarah Segan and Charlotte Hyland, who each missed wide.

The Tribe broke through with the first goal of the afternoon with a nice run by Segan. The rookie took over possession and raced towards the six. She fired her shot passed a diving goalkeeper. Her 10th marker of the season, gave W&M a 1-0 lead.

UNCW knotted the score at 1-1 with a maker in the 29th minute. After steady build up from the Seahawks, Kennedy Ulrich found Moa Jarl just outside the box. Jarl pushed through one more pass that led to Brittany Matsinger shot. Redshirt junior Grace Smith got a touch on the ball, but it had enough on it to trickle into the net.

The Seahawks went on to fire three more shots in search of the lead before the break. Serenity Waters missed wide in the 38th minute, before Blair Pearce also missed wide in the 40th minute. The final chance came from Baley Edwards in the 45th minute, but a Tribe defender blocked it.

W&M came out of the locker room on the offensive and fired a pair of shots to open the second stanza. Seagan missed high in the 49th minute, before junior Rachel Moore missed wide right in the 50th minute.

UNCW took its first lead with a goal in the 50th minute. Matsinger sent a through ball that sprung McClain free on a one-versus-one with the keeper. McLain buried her shot in the back of the net, lifting UNCW to a 2-1 lead.

The Seahawks nearly missed taking a two-goal lead with three chances in a row. Following the goal Waters fired a shot that was turned away by Smith in the 51st minute. Again in the 56th minute Waters found space, but had the same result. The final chance came off of the ensuing corner, when Pearce put a shot on frame that had to be cleared off of the backline by a Tribe defender.

W&M desperately looked for the tying goal following the Seahawk tally. Junior Sami Grasso put a shot on frame that had to be saved by Huddy. Grasso had another chance in the 64th minute, but again Huddy came up with the stop. The Tribe continued to threaten, but struggled to put their shots on frame.

Finally, the Tribe found the equalizer in the 83rd minute. Branton took the ball and sprinted through the Seahawk backline before dribbling around the sprawling keeper. She kicked the ball into the empty net for the equalizer and the first goal of the season.

The first overtime was controlled for a majority of the time by the Green and Gold, which fired four shots. Senior Clara Logsdon pushed a shot high in the 92nd minute, before junior Haley Kent had a shot stopped by Huddy in the 93rd. Segan missed one wide left in the 95th minute, while Logsdon missed high in the final shot for the Tribe in the first extra session.

UNCW had an early chance from Edwards that was blocked by a Tribe defender. The Seahawks best look came with 15 seconds left in overtime. A W&M foul gave Brittany Cline a chance on the edge of the area, but her shot was blocked by the Tribe's wall.

W&M had the only two shots in the second overtime period, but couldn't find the winner. Sophomore Arundel Miguelez had a shot stopped by Huddy in the 101st minute, before Moore missed high later in the same minute.

After 110 minutes, the game went to a penalty kick shootout, which the Tribe won in six rounds, 5-4. Kavanaugh, Logsdon, Moore, Miguelez, and Hyland all scored in the shootout. Smith came up with a save in the top of the sixth round, before Hyland won it.

The Green and Gold held an 18-13 advantage in shots, which included a 7-5 margin in shots on-goal. Grasso and Segan fired a match-high four shots for the College, while Logsdon and Moore took two apiece. Smith made two saves in her first start since Sept. 15.

W&M advances to face top-seeded and host Northeastern in the CAA Semifinals on Friday, Nov. 4. It is the third time in the last four seasons that the two programs have met in the semifinal round. Kickoff for the match is set for 5:30 p.m.
