Elizaveta Nemchinov Earns Second Straight CAA Player of the Year Honor; Lauren Goodman Takes Home Rookie of the Year

RICHMOND, Va. - Once again, the William & Mary women's tennis team dominated the Colonial Athletic Association awards, including senior Elizaveta Nemchinov being selected the CAA Player of the Year for the second straight year. Freshman Lauren Goodman took home the other top player award, becoming the 10th student-athlete in program history to be named the CAA Rookie of the Year. In total, the Tribe led the league with three singles players and two doubles pairs honored on the All-CAA teams.

Adding to her player of the year honor, Nemchinov was a First Team All-CAA pick in both singles and doubles for the third consecutive year. She became just the third player in program history, along with Megan Moulton-Levy '08 and Katarina Zoricic '09, to be named the First Team All-CAA in singles during all four seasons of her career. Junior Marie Faure joined Nemchinov as the only players in the league to be named First Team All-CAA in both singles and doubles. Despite being one of only three players in the CAA with a current nationally-ranked win and a victory over an Elon All-CAA first team player, Goodman was selected to the league's second team in both singles and doubles. Sophomore Maria Groener paired with Goodman to comprise the Tribe's All-CAA second team pair and was also selected to the CAA All-Academic Team.

Nemchinov is the sixth player in CAA history, and third Tribe athlete, to repeat as the league's Player of the Year. With her second CAA Player of the Year honor, W&M has taken home the top honor in 19 of the league's 31 years. The Tribe senior finished the regular season at 18-8 overall and is currently ranked No. 108 nationally in singles. Nemchinov owns a 12-6 mark in dual-match competition at the top singles spot, including three wins over players currently in the national rankings. Her best nationally-ranked win came when she downed No. 41-ranked Paige Hourigan in straight sets during the Tribe's dual-match with No. 15 Georgia Tech. For her career, Nemchinov owns 85 singles wins and 60 doubles triumphs.

Faure garnered First Team All-CAA honors after positing a 14-6 mark in singles, including a 9-4 ledger at No. 2. She was ranked as high as No. 91 nationally this season and owns a pair of nationally-ranked victories. She twice earned CAA Player of the Week honors, including on March 28 following a top-50 upset of Rice's Katherine Ip during W&M's dual-match win over the No. 46-ranked Owls.

Combined, Nemchinov and Faure earned a spot on the all-league's top team for doubles. The duo was ranked as high as No. 65 nationally and currently sits in the No. 77 slot. They are 8-5 on the year with six victories coming at the No. 1 spot. Nemchinov and Faure have downed a pair of nationally-ranked opponents and earned CAA Doubles Team of the Week honors on March 10 after wins over Wisconsin and Illinois.

Goodman was the third Tribe player in the last four years to earn CAA Rookie of the Year honors. A second team All-CAA pick in both singles and doubles, she finished the regular season at 16-6 in singles action, including a 13-5 mark in duals at the top three positions. She earned CAA Player of the Week honors on March 2 after helping the Tribe to wins over Liberty and Harvard. During W&M's upset of current No. 11 South Carolina, Goodman knocked off No. 71-ranked Caroline Dailey as part of the Tribe's singles onslaught. The Tribe rookie also defeated Elon's top player Olivia Lucas, who earned First Team All-CAA honors, during the Green and Gold's 6-1 win at Elon without the services of Nemchinov.

Goodman and Groener rounded out the Tribe honorees, garnering Second Team All-CAA laurels in doubles. The pair posted an 8-5 record, including a victory over Elon's top duo that also earned a spot on the All-CAA Second Team . It marked the second-straight year that Groener was a Second Team All-CAA selection in doubles. Groener was also a member of the CAA All-Academic Team. Earlier this year, she earned a W&M Provost Award, achieving a cumulative grade point average of better than 3.5.

Joining Faure and Nemchinov on the All-CAA first team for singles was Elon's Erica Braschi and Olivia Lucas as well as UNCW's Madara Straume and Liza Fieldsend of Charleston. The teams of UNCW's Christine Kharkevitch and Laura Gomez and the Charleston pair of Katherine Schofield and Mara Argyriou were first team all-league in doubles along the Faure and Nemchinov. Elon's Elizabeth Anderson was named the CAA Coach of the Year after the Phoenix finished as the second seed heading in to the CAA Championship, including 6-1 loss to the Tribe.

James Madison's Timea Guibe and Rachel Nelson, Nicole Shakhnazarova and Lucy Williams of Towson and Drexel's Honami Yazawa joined Goodman on the All-CAA Second Team in singles. The tandems of Elon's Taylor Casey and Braschi and JMU's Guibe and Kimmy Herrock were members of the second team in doubles along with Goodman and Groener. Joining Groener on the CAA All-Academic Team were Elon's Casey, Denny LaMachia of Delaware, JMU's Dylan Owens, Carmen Pestano of Hofstra, Drexel's Clary Rodriguez Cruz, Charleston's Katherine Schofield, Alix Theodossiou of UNCW and Towson's Renate van Oorschodt.

The defending CAA Champion Tribe is the top seed in the 2016 CAA Tournament, April 21-24, at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center on the campus of Elon Unviersity. W&M enters the event at 15-6 on the year and is currently the only CAA team in the ITA National Rankings at No. 36. The Tribe meets the winner of Thursday's opening round match between No. 8 Hofstra and No. 9 Delaware in the quarterfinals on Friday, April 22, at 9 a.m. The CAA Semifinals and Championships are set for 2 p.m., on Saturday, April 23, and Sunday, April 24, respectively.
