Tribe Athletics Celebrates Academic Success at 14th Annual Provost Awards

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (April 7, 2016)  - The William & Mary's Athletics Department hosted its 14th annual Provost Award reception recently (March 30th) to honor an exceptional group of 134 student-athletes at the William & Mary Alumni House.

The 134 student-athletes is a record total for the event (and marks the third consecutive year the athletics department has exceeded its previous highest total) and saw at least one representative from all 23 of the Tribe's varsity programs. The Provost Award is earned by student-athletes who achieve a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 GPA or better.

The women's track and field/cross country and men's gymnastics programs were especially exceptional, as they led the way with 21 and 11 student-athletes represented, respectively.  The lacrosse and women's soccer team were tied for the next highest total with 10 honorees.

While the Provost Award recognizes the highest achievers, the entire athletics department (approximately 500 student-athletes) turned in a cumulative GPA of 3.15, with 20 of the 23 varsity sports showing GPAs of better than 3.0 (for the fall 2014 semester). It marked the ninth consecutive year the Tribe Athletics program either maintained, or improved, its total GPA.  Further, three athletes were named to the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa (Ashley Bruce/T&F/XC, Kelly Martins/Lax and Olivia Jebb/VB), which moves the Tribe's all-time total to 181.

"While this award carries the Provost's name and support, it is really a peer-to-peer recognition," noted W&M's Director of Athletics, Terry Driscoll.  "Our student-athletes created this award more than a decade ago to celebrate the highest academic achievers, and it has been a tradition that has been carried forward with enthusiasm. That fact alone makes it a remarkable event in my opinion.  Our coaches and student-athletes work extremely hard to excel, both competitively and in the classroom."

The event is sponsored by the Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) and was hosted by the College's Provost, Michael R. Halleran.   he program was initiated by the SAAC, which is a group of student representatives from each of W&M's 23 intercollegiate teams.

"William & Mary is an academically elite institution and competes at the highest level of Division I Athletics," said Halleran during the event. "For a student to be successful in either academics or athletics at these levels is impressive; to succeed in both is truly remarkable and a cause for celebration."
