WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (Jan. 11, 2017) – The William & Mary women's gymnastics team defeated Alaska Anchorage, 191.325-188.950, in its home opener at Kaplan Arena on Wednesday evening.
En route to earning the victory, W&M posted the top team score in three of the four events.
Senior
Briana Gironda highlighted the Tribe's individual performances by winning the all-around title with a 38.700. Additionally, the Medina, Ohio claimed the floor title (9.825) and tied for first on bars (9.800) and beam (9.700).
W&M opened the meet in impressive fashion with a 48.275 on vault, as Tribe gymnasts posted the top five scores in the event. Senior
Olivia O'Connor sophomore
Katie Webber led the way by tying for the individual title with a pair of 9.750's.
The Tribe then moved to bars where it recorded its best score of the evening (48.550), as W&M gymnasts registered the top four scores. Gironda and freshman
Caroline Caponi tied for first, while O'Conner earned a 9.750.
Gironda tied for first on beam and junior
Kellie Wanamaker earned a career-best 9.650 to help the Tribe total a team score of 47.650 in the event.
W&M closed out the dual meet victory with a 46.850 on floor, as Gironda and
Sophie Harris (9.625) posted the team's top two scores in the event.
In addition to Gironda, O'Connor (38.550) and Caponi (37.950) also competed as all-arounders and placed second and third, respectively.
The Tribe will return to action when it competes at a tri-meet hosted by NC State next Friday.
