SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Feb. 7, 2016) – The William & Mary men's gymnastics team defeated Springfield College, 403.4 – 401.15, at the New England Championships on Sunday afternoon.
En route to helping W&M earn the victory, four Tribe gymnasts combined to win five individual event titles – sophomore
Juan Palma (floor, 15.0; vault, 14.25), sophomore
Griffin Antle (pommel horse, 14.25), freshman
Peter Makey (rings, 13.5) and junior
Aria Sabbagh (high bar, 14.3). Additionally, Sabbagh claimed the all-round title with an 80.9.
The College's best performance came on floor (71.15) where W&M gymnasts claimed the top four spots. In addition to Palma's winning score (15.0), senior
Simon Casey (14.3), freshman
Jack Hasenkopf (14.1) and Sabbagh (14.05) all performed well to round out the group.
The Tribe also earned the top two scores on pommel horse, as Antle (14.25) and Casey (14.2) helped the squad post a 66.8.
While Makey led W&M on rings with a winning mark of 13.5, Sabbagh placed third with a 13.25 to help the team record a 65.65.
The Tribe posted a 66.85 on vault, as Palma's winning effort (14.25) and Casey's third-place finish (13.45) led the way.
W&M gymnasts also took the first and third spots on high bar (65.5), as Sabbagh (14.3) and freshman
David Allen (13.5) secured the team's top two scores.
Palma highlighted the College's effort on parallel bars (67.45) with a third-place performance (13.8), while Sabbagh and Antle both recorded a 13.75 to tie for fourth.
While Sabbagh won the all-around title, Allen tied for third (76.5).
The Tribe will return to action when it competes at the Peach Tree Invitational next Saturday.
