03/04/04 9:20PM
RICHMOND, VA - William and Mary freshman forward Corey Cofield (Wellesley, MA) was voted the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Year and picked to the All-CAA third team, senior forward Adam Hess (Grosse Pointe, MI) was named to the league’s first team and all-academic team, and junior guard Nick D’Antoni (Myrtle Beach, SC) was also named to the conference’s all-academic team. The awards were announced tonight at the CAA’s basketball awards banquet on the eve of this weekend’s conference tournament.
Cofield ended the regular season leading all CAA rookies in scoring (13.0 ppg), rebounding (6.6 rpg) and field goal percentage (.563). He is the second Tribe player to earn the conference’s rookie of the year award, along with Thomas Roberts, who won the honor in 1990. Cofield was named CAA Rookie of the Week three times and leads the team with six double-doubles on the year. His .563 field goal percentage is currently the fifth-best in a single season in Tribe history.
The only player to repeat as a first team all-league selection, Hess leads the league in scoring by 3.6 points per game with an average of 20.2 ppg this season. He is also ranked in the top 15 in the CAA in seven other categories, including rebounds and steals. Earlier today it was announced the Hess had been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team after earning second team honors last year. This season he was also voted to the NABC All-District 4 and CoSIDA Academic All-District III first teams for the second straight year. With a career scoring average of 17.8 ppg, Hess ranks sixth in W&M history and 10th in the CAA record book.
A 2002 CAA All-Rookie Team selection, D’Antoni is ranked third in the conference with 5.67 assists per game and fourth with a 2.12 assist-to-turnover ratio. He ranks second on W&M’s single-season lists in assist per game and in total assists (153), needing 15 more to tie Scott Coval’s school record of 168 assists set in 1985. Three times this season he has had 10 or more assists in a single game, tying a W&M record, and he has recorded nine assists in each of the last two contests.
The Tribe ended the regular season with a record of 7-20 and tied Towson for eighth place in the league with a 4-14 record. W&M will face Towson in the first round of the CAA Tournament tomorrow at 5:30 PM in the Richmond Coliseum. The winner of that game will face top seed Virginia Commonwealth in the quarterfinal round on Saturday at noon.
