W&M Men’s Tennis Opens Play at UVA Invitational

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - William and Mary’s men’s tennis team opened well at the UVA Invitational today at the University of Virginia’s Snyder Tennis Center. Leading the way was senior Jeff Kader (Geneva, OH), ranked 26th in the nation and seeded third in the tournament. Kader won both his singles matches, defeating Val Banada (NC State) and Darrin Cohen (Virginia) to advance to the quarterfinals of the top flight.

Also winning two singles matches and advancing to the quarterfinals of Flight B were freshmen Alexandru Cojanu (Hallandale, FL) and Matt Rubenstein (East Hampton, NY). Cojanu defeated Ben Zink (NC State) and Tim Taylor (Virginia), while Rubenstein took down John Schults (Wake Forest) and David Rozek (NC State).

In doubles action, the W&M teams of Cojanu/Kader and senior Sean Kelleher (Forty Fort, PA) and junior Stephen Ward (Douglaston, NY) each remained undefeated on the year with first-round victories. Cojanu and Kader improved to 4-0 with a 9-7 win over Brett Ross and John Schults (Wake Forest). Kelleher and Ward ran their season-opening streak to five consecutive wins with a 9-8 win over Burak Ahmed and Eric Riley (Virginia).

The UVA Invitational will continue through Sunday.
