W&M Men’s Tennis Hosts Doubleheader on Saturday

- William and Mary’s men’s tennis team will return to action from a 12-day layoff with a home doubleheader Saturday, Feb. 26 at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center ... The 64th ranked Tribe will start the day with a 9:00 AM match against No. 29 Harvard ... W&M will host Colonial Athletic Association rival George Mason in the second match at 1:30 PM ... These will be the Tribe last home matches for more than a month and are the final matches scheduled to be played indoors this season.

About the Tribe
W&M will enter Saturday’s doubleheader with a record of 3-6 and ranked 64th in the nation ... The Tribe is 1-0 in Colonial Athletic Association play, with a 5-2 win over James Madison in the College’s last match ... W&M opened the season with 6-1 victories over Winthrop and Richmond ... Senior Jeff Kader is ranked 57th in the nation in singles ... Kader and freshman Alex Cojanu are 48th in the country in doubles.
About the Crimson
Harvard is ranked 29th in the country and has a record of 3-3 this season ... The Crimson opened the season with 5-2 victories over Northwestern and Clemson, and defeated Southern California, 4-2, at the ITA Team Indoor Championships in Chicago last week ... Harvard’s losses have come against Louisville (4-3), Florida (4-0) and Oklahoma State (4-2) ... The Crimson have two ranked singles players in No. 28 Jonathan Chu and No. 30 Martin Wetzel ... Harvard also has two nationally ranked doubles teams ... Wetzel and Jason Beren are 10th in the nation and Chu and Ashwin Kumar are ranked 26th ... Last season the Crimson finished with a record of 19-7 and were ranked 22nd in the nation ... Harvard won the Ivy League with a 7-0 record in 2004, advancing to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament.

Since the start of the 1977 season, W&M and Harvard have split their four matches ... The last meeting between the two teams was April 5, 2003, with the Crimson defeating W&M, 5-2, in Cambridge ... The College’s last win against Harvard was March 27, 1982, when the Tribe posted a 6-3 victory in Williamsburg ... The Tribe defeated the Crimson, 7-2, in Williamsburg on March 27, 1978 ... In the only other meeting between the two teams in Williamsburg, Harvard recorded a 7-2 win on March 26, 1985.
About the Patriots
George Mason will enter Saturday’s match with a record of 0-1, having lost at Navy, 5-0, to start the season ... Last year the Patriots finished 2-18 overall, defeating Drexel (5-2) and Coppin State (7-0) ... GMU lost to Towson, 4-1, in the first round of the 2004 CAA Tournament.
The George Mason Series
W&M is 16-3 against George Mason ... The Tribe has won five straight against the Patriots, beating GMU by a combined score of 33-1 in those matches ... The last meeting between the two teams was Feb. 3, 2001, a 7-0 W&M win in Williamsburg ... The Patriots’ last win over the Green and Gold was a 4-3 decision in Fairfax on March 25, 1995 ... The series began with a 7-2 Tribe win in Williamsburg on April 6, 1978.
Peter Daub Honored by Temple
Temple University recently announced that W&M head coach Peter Daub was named one of 20 “Outstanding Graduates of the Sport and Recreation Administration Program” at the school ... Daub received his graduate degree from Temple in 1987.
2004 Fall Review
In fall individual tournaments, the Tribe combined for a 45-40 (.529) singles record and a 28-41 (.683) doubles mark ... Freshman Alex Cojanu led the team with 11 singles victories, reaching the finals of the B Flight at the UVA Invitational and the championship match of the top flight at the Hampton Roads Invitational ... In doubles, Cojanu and senior Jeff Kader went 8-2, including a win over No. 10 Jeff Groslimond/Chris Westerhof (Florida State) to reach the quarterfinals of the ITA Mideast Regionals ... Senior Sean Kelleher and junior Stephen Ward went 9-3 in doubles this fall, aso reaching the regional quarterfinals, after defeating No. 26 Nate Grover/Izak van der Merwe.
