Tribe Men’s Tennis Blanks George Mason, 7-0

WILLIAMSBURG, VA - William and Mary’s men’s tennis team, ranked 64th in the nation, won all six singles and three doubles matches, as the Tribe shut out George Mason, 7-0, this afternoon at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.

The victory improves the College’s record to 4-7 overall and 2-0 in Colonial Athletic Association play, while the Patriots fall to 0-2 (0-1 CAA).

The Tribe quickly cruised through the doubles matches, easily winning all three to take the team point. Junior Stephen Ward (Douglaston, NY) and freshman Matt Rubenstein (East Hampton, NY) finished first, blanking Phu Le and Rob Santos, 8-0, on court three. Sophomore Colin O’Brien (Dublin, Ireland) and rookie Alex Cojanu (Hallandale, FL) clinched the point with their 8-1 win in the top match against Tim Bainton/Stephan Dufils. Senior Sean Kelleher (Forty Fort, PA) and freshman Kavi Sud (Allentown, PA) closed out doubles with an 8-2 win at No. 2 over Miles Hughes and Eric Vogel.

W&M was even more dominating in singles, especially at the bottom four matches, where the Tribe won 42 of the 43 games played. Rubenstein gave the College a 2-0 lead, winning the first set, 6-0 and then taking the match when his opponent, Santos, retired after dropping the first game of the second. Ward put W&M just one point from victory with his 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 over Le. O’Brien clinched the win, defeating Vogel, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3. Also winning their singles matches were senior Jeff Kader (Geneva, OH) (ranked 57th in the nation) at No. 1, Cojanu at No. 2 and senior Alex Fish (Scituate, MA) at No. 4.

The match is the Tribe’s final home contest for more than a month, as W&M hits the road for its next five matches. The Tribe returns to action on March 2 at Stanford, currently ranked 18th in the nation.
