Men’s Golf Finishes Ninth at Big 5 Classic

PHILADELPHIA, PA - William and Mary ended play at the Big 5 Classic Sunday in ninth place, only seven shots out of fifth. Richmond and George Washington tied for the tournament lead at 592, with Richmond being declared champions because their fifth golfer scored better in the final round than George Washington’s did. Penn State was third, three shots behind the leaders, with Columbia (598, +30) and Villanova (605, +37) rounding out the top 5. Villanova’s Steve Arnold won the 14-team event by shooting 142 (E) on the par-71, 6,843-yard course at the Philadelphia Cricket Club.

Freshman Brent Paladino (Kensington, CT) was the top Tribe golfer this weekend, shooting 74-76 to finish at +8, tied for 16th. Three shots back, junior Matt Brantingham (Richmond, VA) continued his trend of improving in each tournament, tying for 27th after carding 76 and 77. Jay Sutton (Edgewood, KY) improved four strokes between rounds (80-76) to tie for 38th at 156. Also improving between rounds, Ryan Price (Chantilly, VA) cut two strokes to finish tied for 50th with 158 (80-78). Rounding out the team was freshman Doug Hurson (Bethesda, MD), who struggled a bit in the second round, shooting 84 to finish tied for 53rd at 159.

The team finishes the fall season next weekend up in Leesburg, Virginia, at the Georgetown Invitational (Oct. 22-23).
