Track and Field, Cross Country Programs Honored for Philanthropy

WILLIAMSBURG - Earlier this summer, the W&M men’s and women’s track and cross country programs were recognized for their outstanding work for philanthropy by induction into the Medical College of Virginia’s Founder’s Club. The Founder’s Club recognizes those individuals and organizations that have contributed over $100,000 to support the Medical College of Virginia and its programs.

Under the volunteer leadership of Randy and Shelby Hawthorne, and Charles and Ginny Crone, the track and cross country teams began contributing to the Massey Cancer Center 18 years ago through the “Run for a Cure” program, and to date they have raised over $100,000. That tradition will continue this year on November 4th, with a run through the main campus. Every dollar contributed goes to support the physicians and scientists at the Massey Cancer Center, who use those funds to continue searching for effective treatments and cures for a variety of cancers.

Mickey Dowdy, President of the MCV Foundation, came down from Richmond to hand-deliver a framed resolution honoring the programs for their support. On hand for the ceremony were William and Mary President Gene R. Nichol, Randy Hawthorne, the Crones, Director of Track and Field Dan Stimson and his wife Rosemary, head coaches Alex Gibby and Kathy Newberry, assistant coach Emil Davis, Assistant Coordinator of Student Volunteer Services Lauren Grainger, Tribe record-holder Cassidy Harris ’05, and current Tribe athletes Kristyn Shiring (Stafford, VA), Dan Nally (Warrenton, VA), and Matt Wolak (Richmond, VA).
