Kayley Byrne Wins Cavalier Open

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - With only one week to go before the NCAA Regional Championships, William and Mary’s women’s cross country sent several runners to Charlottesville today to compete against James Madison and Virginia.

True freshman Kayley Byrne (Oak Hill, Va.) won the 31-runner race with a 6K time of 18:37.30. It is Byrne’s first collegiate victory, and second for the Tribe this season. Sophomore Rebecca Ward (Midlothian, Va.) was third in 18:49.70, and junior Abby Booker (Haddonfield, N.J.) claimed fifth in 18:59.30. Freshman Emily Anderson (Golf, Ill.) led a string of eight-straight Tribe finishers in seventh place, a run that included Meghan Burns (Coopersburg, Penn.), Emily Arena (Manassas, Va.), and Karin Ohman (Arlington, Va.) in eighth, ninth, and tenth, respectively.

Keely Murphy (Owings, Md.) was 11th with a time of 19:25.50, and was followed in the total span of eight seconds by Katie Endres (Sterling, Va.), Ashley Davies (Whitehouse Station, N.J.), and Ellen Childress (Arlington, Va.). Sallie Ford (Lynchburg, Va.) was 20th, and Kate Willever (Pennington, N.J.), Rachel Ohm (West Coxsackie, N.Y.), and Kelly McElroy (Wyomissing, Penn.) rounded out the Tribe effort in 24th, 25th, and 26th places, respectively.

William and Mary will attempt to make history next weekend and qualify for the NCAA Championships for a second-consecutive year, when it runs at the Southeast Region Championships in Louisville, Kentucky.
