Sprick, Stepanek Leading Team After First Round

WILLIAMSBURG - William and Mary's women's golf team had a solid effort today in the first round of the W&M Invitational at Ford's Colony, shooting 333 to stand 14th. Western Michigan holds a one-shot lead over the field, and also boasts the individual leader in Laura Bavaird, who shot 72 (E) to stand two shots ahead of everyone else. The 36-hole tournament is being played on the Marsh Hawk course, with a par of 72 strokes and length of 6,030 yards.

The Tribe team was led in the first round by Marissa Sprick (Windermere, Fla.) and Morgan Stepanek (Guilford, Conn.), who each shot 82 to stand tied for 39th. Freshman Brielle Paolini (Virginia Beach, Va.) is tied for 53rd after shooting 84, one shot ahead of junior Erika Oldenkamp (Hinsdale, Ill.). Senior captain Melissa DePuy (Naples, Fla.) rounds out the College's effort in a tie for 73rd.

William and Mary also has a trio competing as individuals in the tournament. Junior Misha Harvey (Forest, Va.) turned in a round of 80 to stand tied for 25th. Freshman Robyn English (Warwick, R.I.) is tied for 46th after shooting 83, and sophomore Ellie Costello (Wilmette, Ill.) carded 92.

The W&M Invitational concludes with one round tomorrow.
