Kathy Newberry Finishes 39th at World Cross Country Championships

MOMBASA, KENYA - William and Mary’s head women’s cross country and track coach Kathy Newberry ’00 ran in her third World Cross Country Championships today, placing 39th overall. Lornah Kiplagat of the Netherlands won the gold medal in 26:23, and Team Ethiopia won the team title by placing runners in the next three positions.

Newberry was the third American finisher in the race, crossing the line in 29:54 as Team USA finished ninth. She earned her spot on Team USA by placing ninth at last month’s national championships. In 2004, Newberry was 25th at the world championships, and finished 38th two years ago. This season, she mentored the Tribe to its 14th Colonial Athletic Association crown, and a program-best second-place finish at the ECAC Championships.
