Katie Radloff Named CAA Swimmer of the Year

RICHMOND, VA - The awards continue to roll in for William and Mary's women's swimming team on the heels of the first conference championship-winning season in school history. The Colonial Athletic Association announced the winners of the major post-season awards, including Tribe freshman Katie Radloff (Arlington, Va.) as the 2007 Women's Swimmer of the Year and freshman Courtney Alles (Manassas Park, Va.) as the 2007 Women's Rookie Swimmer of the Year.

Radloff had one of the best seasons in school history for any swimmer, male or female. Undefeated in 24 freestyle races during the regular season, she won the 50, 100, and 200-yard freestyles at the CAA Championships to help lead W&M to its first-ever conference championship. She also was an integral part of three gold-medal relays, breaking the conference records in the 200 medley, 400 freestyle, and 800 freestyle relays, as well as taking silver with a school-record performance in the 200 freestyle relay. For her exploits, she was named the Swimmer of the Meet, the first freshman to win the award since 1996.

Radloff also made a name for herself nationally, becoming the first Tribe swimmer to compete at the NCAA Championships since Erin Sheehey '84 in 1983. She swam the three sprint freestyles at the national championships, posting a best finish of 32nd in the 100-yard free. In December, she swam unattached at the U.S. Open, placing 18th in the finals of 100-meter freestyle and just missing qualifying for the 2008 Olympic Trials. She currently holds all five school relay records, as well as the school records in the 50-yard free (22.92 seconds), 100-yard free (49.55), and the 200-yard free (1:48.30).

Alles exploded at the CAA Championships, taking gold medals in the 200-yard individual medley, 400-yard individual medley, and the 400-yard freestyle relay. Her championship turns in the 200 IM (2:06.09) and the 400 IM (4:26.98) rank second in school history, behind only all-time great Ruth Anne Miller '03. Alles also qualified for the championship finals in the 200-yard breaststroke, swimming 2:23.65, the seventh-best performance in school history, to take fifth place. Her 54 points at the conference championships tied for second amongst all swimmers, behind only Radloff's 60. During the regular season, Alles was one of seven Tribe athletes to win 11 or more dual-meet races.

Also honored was head coach McGee Moody, the 2007 Women's Swimming Coach of the Year. Moody led his team to the school's first CAA winter-season championship after an 8-4 (6-2 CAA) regular season, winning a conference-record 12 gold medals at the championship meet. Throughout the season, the team broke 31 school records, placed 112 times in the all-time top-10, set 155 lifetime bests, and had 17 NCAA-qualifying performances. After only three seasons at the helm of Tribe swimming and diving, Moody already tops the all-time coaching lists in combined winning percentage (.550), combined wins per year (12.67), and women's wins per year (8.00).

The CAA also announced the all-conference teams for both men and women. All-conference performers were swimmers and divers who placed in the top three of their events at the CAA Championships. William and Mary's women's team totaled 35 All-CAA awards, while the men's team picked up another five.
