Renée Cork Honored as the NATA National Assistant Athletic Trainer of the Year

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - William and Mary Senior Associate Athletic Trainer Renée Cork was recently honored as the College/University National Assistant Athletic Trainer of the Year by the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA). Cork was recognized for her outstanding work with the College and the organization at the regional and national levels.

"Our athletic training program is built upon a foundation of teamwork within our staff, which allows all of us to maintain a healthy professional and personal life,” W&M Assistant Athletic Director for Health Services Steve Cole said. “As we often hear in athletics, there is no ‘I’ in team and that is how Renée looks at life. She is always considerate of others and is the most dependable member on our staff!

“Renée is truly deserving of this very prestigious recognition. Her work ethic, strong caring approach and attention to detail while maintaining a clear understanding of the ‘big picture’ provides a role model for the entire staff to emulate. She is the ‘glue’ and the lubricant that keeps our athletic training program at the highest level each and every day.”

Active in the Mid-Atlantic Trainers’ Association (MAATA), she has served on the organization’s program committee at the annual meeting and clinical symposium since 2002. Additionally, she is the director of CPR training at the MAATA annual meeting and is the chairperson for the MAATA Scholarship Committee.

Cork has also served as the program committee chairperson for the Virginia Athletic Trainers’ Association (VATA) annual meeting and clinical symposium since 2003 and has served as a member of the Executive Council of VATA.

In 1999, Cork received the Sport Safety Training Award from the American Red Cross. Additionally, the governor appointed her to the Athletic Training Advisory Board in 2002. She is the only collegiate athletic trainer and the only female representative currently serving on the board.

Cork is currently in her 16th year with the College and works primarily with women’s basketball, field hockey, men’s tennis and the throwers on the track team. Additionally, she oversees CPR training for all William and Mary coaches and serves as an adjunct professor with Old Dominion’s Post-Professional Athletic Training Education program.
