The year kicks off within two weeks of the start of school, with the Green and Gold heading to Southern Pines, North Carolina for the Mid Pines Invitational at Mid Pines Golf Club, September 10-11. After a weekend off, W&M returns to the Tar Heel State for the Sea Trail Intercollegiate at Sea Trail Resort, in Sunset Beach September 22-23.
October brings three events to the table, starting with the Belmont Invitational in Nashville, Tennessee October 15-16. The tournament will be held at the Nashville Golf & Athletic Club. October 22-23 finds the College at the Georgetown Hoya Invitational in Beallsville, Maryland. Last season, W&M finished second at the tournament and will look to improve on that finish at the Members Club at Four Streams. The fall season ends October 27-28 in Wilmington, North Carolina, with The Landfall Tradition at Landfall Country Club.
The season resumes after three months at the Rice Intercollegiate in Houston, Texas, February 18-19. The 13-team event will be held this year at the Westwood Country Club. Buies Creek, North Carolina is the next stop on tour, with the Fighting Camel Classic at Keith Hill Country Club March 3-4.
William and Mary’s home tournament operates under a new name in 2008, and the First Market Bank Intercollegiate returns to the River Course at Kingsmill Resort for two rounds on March 17-18. The final regular-season tournament is the Marshall Invitational, April 4-5 at the Guyan Golf and Country Club in Huntington, West Virginia.
The Colonial Athletic Association Championship returns to Williamsburg for the first time since the inaugural event in 1984 on April 18-20. This year’s championship will be played at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in the Colonial Area, site of the 2007 NCAA Men’s Championship. As always, the goal for Coach Albaugh and his team will be a berth at one of the three NCAA Regionals that will be held May 15-17 in Tennessee, Ohio, and Washington. The 2008 NCAA Championships are scheduled for May 28-31 in West Lafayette, Indiana.
The Tribe returns four of the top five golfers and nine of 11 total from last year’s team that went 88-50-1 with a 300.24 stroke average per round. Highlighting the group will be second-team All-CAA selection Doug Hurson (Bethesda, Md.) and all-tournament team member Brent Paladino (Kensington, Conn.). Hurson led the team with a stroke average of 74 and set the school record for 54-holes when he shot 208 at the Joe Agee Invitational. Paladino tied for second on the team with an average of 75 strokes per round, and peaked at the CAA Championships with his fifth-place finish.
