WILLIAMSBURG - The College of William and Mary announced today the women’s golf 2007-08 competitive slate, the fifth under Director of Golf Jay Albaugh. Showcasing the Tribe against the usual mix of regional and national competition, the schedule has 10 tournaments on it, including a trio of events in Williamsburg.
Complete Women's Golf Schedule
First up for the College will be the longest road-trip of the season, a flight out to Lincoln, Nebraska for the Chip-N Invitational. The tournament will be hosted at the Yankee Trace Golf Club on September 10-11. One week later, the Tribe will be back home for the Colonial Women’s Intercollegiate, which will be at Williamsburg National Golf Club September 17-18. William and Mary won the event the last time it was held, in 2005, shooting 299 as a team to set the school record for lowest team score in a round.
W&M travels to State College, Pennsylvania as the month turns for the Nittany Lion Invitational at the Penn State University Golf Club, September 30-October 1. From there, it’s a weekend off and then a short jaunt up I-64 to the Spider Invitational, October 15-16 at Independence Golf Club in Richmond. The fall closes at the Ross Resorts Invitational, October 29-30 at the Mid Pines Golf Club in Southern Pines, North Carolina.
After a three-month winter hiatus, the season picks back up February 25-26 with the Fighting Camel Classic. Hosted by Campbell University in Buies Creek, North Carolina, the FCC will be held at the Keith Hills Golf Club. After another break of almost a month, the Tribe hosts the First Market Bank Intercollegiate March 22-23 at Ford’s Colony Country Club.
The regular season closes with a return to two tournaments that used to be staples of the College’s schedule in the 1980’s and early 90’s. First is the Tina Barrett Invitational, March 31 and April 1 at the Poplar Hill Golf Club in Farmville, Virginia. One week later, the Tribe heads down to the River Landing Golf Club in Wallace, North Carolina for the UNCW Lady Seahawk Invitational, April 7-8.
The Colonial Athletic Association Championship comes to Williamsburg for the first time in 2008 on April 18-20. This year’s championship will be played at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in the Colonial Area, site of the 2007 NCAA Men’s Championship. The Tribe will be aiming for the program’s first NCAA Regional bid and the chance to play at one of the three regionals in Georgia, California, and Texas May 8-10. The 2008 NCAA Women’s Championship will be held May 20-23 at the University of New Mexico Golf Course in Albuquerque.
The Tribe returns four of the top five golfers and seven of nine total from last year’s team that twice had all five golfers hit 79 or below, the only two times that has occurred in school history. Seniors Erika Oldenkamp (Hinsdale, Ill.) and Misha Harvey (Forest, Va.), both ranked in the Tribe’s all-time top-five in scoring average, will lead a team that includes five upperclassmen, as well as players like sophomore Brielle Paolini (Virginia Beach, Va.), who in July became the first player in school history to be named to the NGCA All-American Scholar Team.
