Former Tribe Lax Standout Kristen Wong Selected to National Team

Williamsburg - Former William and Mary lacrosse standout Kristen Wong (‘07) has been named to the United States Women’s Elite team following a three-day tryout last weekend. Wong, a two-time First-Team All-CAA selection for the Tribe, was among 98 players vying for a spot on the 24-member Elite team or 24-member Developmental team.

Wong was among the 98 players selected from a pool of approximately 180 who competed during the first round of tryouts in the Stars and Stripes Division at the US Lacrosse Women's Division National Tournament held at Lehigh University on May 26-27.

Wong capped an outstanding four-year career with a tremendous senior season in the spring, ranking among the national leaders in both ground balls (58) and caused turnovers (37), while recording career-highs in points (28), goals (17) and assists (11). She averaged 3.62 ground balls per game, which ranked second in the CAA and third in Division I, while Wong’s clip of 2.31 caused turnovers per game was also second in the league and eighth nationally.

The U.S. Elite team includes nine new players this year – including six that moved up from the Developmental team. Rachael Becker Dececco, the 2003 Tewaaraton Trophy winner, is one of three former Tewaaraton Trophy winners on the team, joining Katie Chrest (2005) and Kristen Kjellman (2006, 2007). Three current college players were selected to the Elite team – Duke's Caroline Cryer, Northwestern's Meredith Frank and North Carolina's Erica LaGrow.

The next activity for the U.S. teams will be the Stars & Stripes Weekend in October. The event is slated to be held in Portland, Ore., and will feature competition against the University of California, the University of Oregon and Stanford University. Fur-ther details will be announced in the near future.
