Tribe Falls at No. 4 Duke

Durham, N.C. - The William and Mary field hockey team dropped its first match of the season at No. 4 Duke, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Devils, who have advanced to each of the last four NCAA Final Fours, scored once in the opening half of play and added a pair of late second-half tallies to record the win. W&M fell to 2-1 on the year, while Duke upped its record to 2-1.

After Duke failed to score on three shots and a penalty corner over the opening 10 minutes of the contest, W&M got its first crack at the scoring column. On the Tribe’s first penalty corner of the game, senior Laura Kastelic sent a shot on cage that was stopped by Duke goalkeeper Caitlin Williams.

The Blue Devils finally broke the scoreless tie with less than seven minutes remaining in the opening half. Ashley Pultorak scored her first goal of the season off an assist from Laura Suchoski, giving Duke a 1-0 lead heading into the locker room.

Suchoski made it a two-goal game with a tally off a penalty corner in the 53rd minute. The Blue Devils iced the contest with a goal off a penalty corner in the final seconds. Amie Survilla converted the opportunity off assists from Brooke Patterson and Marian Dickinson as time expired for the final 3-0 margin.

Kastelic led the Tribe with two shots. Senior goalkeeper Gwen Hunter finished with two saves against the Blue Devils.

The Tribe will return to action against another top-10 opponent in Durham, N.C. W&M will face defending Big Ten Champion and No. 10-ranked Iowa on Monday, Sept. 3, at 1 p.m.
