Zimmeck’s Golden Goal Lifts Tribe to a 1-0 Victory Against Maine

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Junior forward Claire Zimmeck scored a Golden Goal midway through the second overtime period to lift the William and Mary women’s soccer team to a 1-0 victory against Maine in the final day of action at the Tribe Invitational on Sunday afternoon. Zimmeck and junior Danielle Collins were selected to the all-tournament team.

Zimmeck recorded her goal on a breakaway down the middle of the field and found the lower left portion of the net with 4:46 remaining in the contest. It was Zimmeck’s first goal this season.

Although the scoreboard indicated a close match, the Green and Gold (2-2) out-shot the Black Bears (0-3-1) by a 21-4 count. Additionally, the College finished the afternoon with a 9-1 advantage in shots on goal and had a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Individually, Collins registered a team-high five shots, while senior Emily Kittleson had four. Zimmeck and senior Mary MacKenzie Grier totaled three shots apiece.

Junior goalkeeper Meghan Walker played the entire match and posted her second shutout of the season.

The Tribe recorded a flurry of shots early in the contest but came up empty. W&M’s closest attempt came in the 14th minute when Kittleson fired from 15 yards out on the left side, but the shot hit the crossbar. The Green and Gold nearly scored again in the 40th minute when junior Meredith Brown’s long strike from 25 yards out also clanked off the crossbar.

At the intermission, the Tribe held an 11-3 advantage in shots.

W&M also had a number of scoring chances in the second frame and out-shot Maine, 9-1. Zimmeck nearly poked one in with a header off a corner kick from junior Abby Lauer in the 80th minute, and Grier had a header saved in the waning seconds of regulation.

The Tribe will return to action again next weekend when it takes on North Carolina and Navy at the VCU Tournament.
