Morgan Stepanek Leads Tribe on First Day of Chip-N Invitational

LINCOLN, NEB - William and Mary’s women’s golf team opened the 2007-08 season today with 36 holes of golf at the Chip-N Invitational, hosted by the University of Nebraska. With one round left to play Tuesday morning, the Tribe is alone in sixth with rounds of 313-311 (+56). Texas State owns a one-shot lead over Kansas State in the 19-team field, with Lina Gustafsson of the Bobcats tied with Sara Wikstrom of Arkansas-Little Rock for the individual lead at one-over (143).

Day One Results

Sophomore Morgan Stepanek (Guilford, Conn.) posted consecutive career-best rounds today to lead the Tribe. Stepanek opened the day with a four-over 75, and followed with a three-over 74 to stand tied for eighth, six strokes behind the leaders. Senior Erika Oldenkamp (Hinsdale, Ill.) also posted two rounds in the 70s, carding 78-79 to stand tied for 29th. Two of William and Mary’s freshman are tied at 36th, with Sarah Whitney (Hingham, Mass.) pairing 80s and Katie Murphy (Chesapeake, Va.) shooting 82-78. Sophomore Brielle Paolini (Virginia Beach, Va.) rounded out the Tribe effort with rounds of 80-87 for a tie at 77th.

The Chip-N Invitational closes with one round of play on Tuesday morning.
