Tribe Set for the VCU/Ewing Sports Invitational

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The William and Mary women’s soccer team will return to action again this weekend when it squares off against Navy and second-ranked North Carolina at the VCU/Ewing Sports Invitational in Richmond, Va. W&M (2-2) will take on the Midshipmen (3-0-2) on Friday at 4 p.m. before playing the Tar Heels (2-1) on Sunday at 3 p.m.

Last weekend, the College went 1-1 at the Tribe Invitational with a 1-0 double-overtime victory against Maine and a 2-1 loss to Oklahoma. Junior forward Claire Zimmeck tallied the Green and Gold’s game-winner versus the Black Bears when she found the back of the net with 4:46 remaining in the contest. The Fairfax, Va., native was selected to the all-tournament team and was joined by junior midfielder Danielle Collins, who scored the Tribe’s goal versus the Sooners.

While the College has outscored its opponents by a narrow 5-4 margin this season, it has out-shot them, 51-28. Additionally, W&M has registered shutouts in two of its four matches.

Navy enters this weekend’s match with a 3-0-2 record and sports wins against IUPUI, St. Peter’s and Towson. The Midshipmen’s draws have come against Iowa and Rider. As a team, Navy has outscored its opponents, 10-2, and has out-shot them, 96-29. Brigitte Fox leads the team with eight points on three goals and a pair of assists. Last season, W&M and Navy earned a 0-0 draw in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, but the Midshipmen advanced on penalty kicks.

After falling in its season opener to South Carolina, the Tar Heels rebounded last weekend with wins against No. 3 Texas A&M and Yale. UNC has outscored the opposition, 6-2, and has a 52-10 advantage in shots. Allie Long leads the squad with a pair of goals, while Yael Averbuch has recorded three assists.
