Tribe Blanks Navy, 4-0

RICHMOND, Va. - Junior Claire Zimmeck and sophomore Sarah Quinlan each tallied a pair of goals as the William and Mary women’s soccer team defeated Navy, 4-0, on Friday afternoon at the VCU/Ewing Sports Invitational in Richmond, Va. With the victory, W&M improves its record to 3-2, while the Midshipmen fall to 3-1-2.

Zimmeck tallied the game-winner in the 35th minute when she gathered a loose ball outside the box and found the lower left portion of the net from 25 yards out.

The Fairfax, Va., native registered her second goal of the afternoon early in the second half when she fielded a pass from senior Emily Kittleson and scored with a header into the top right corner.

Quinlan provided the Green and Gold with a pair of insurance goals less than 10 minutes later when she found the back of the net twice in less than a minute span. Her first score occurred when she corralled a loose ball and lofted a shot from 40 yards out over VCU’s drawn out goalkeeper in the 61st minute. Fifty-one seconds later, she struck again when she raced down the right side and blasted a shot into the lower left corner.

“We played exceptionally well – especially in the second half,” Head Coach John Daly said. “All four of our goals were outstanding. Additionally, we played extremely well defensively and were very organized in the back.”

W&M dominated much of the action and finished the match with a 14-6 advantage in shots. Zimmeck led the Tribe with four shots (three on goal), while Quinlan totaled three attempts, all of which were on goal. Kittleson and sophomore Danielle Collins also recorded a pair of shots apiece.

Goalkeepers Meghan Walker, Mary Jo Loos and Grace Barnard combined for the shutout. It marked the third time this season that the Tribe has blanked its opponent.

W&M will play its final match at the VCU Invitational when it squares off against No. 2 North Carolina on Sunday at 3 p.m.
