Tribe Upends No. 2 North Carolina, 1-0

RICHMOND, Va. - The William and Mary women’s soccer team earned one of the biggest wins in the program’s history with a 1-0 victory against No. 2 North Carolina at the VCU/Ewing Sports Invitational on Sunday afternoon in Richmond, Va. Junior Claire Zimmeck tallied the game-winner in the 85th minute when she scored on a header from five yards out off a pass from senior Emily Kittleson.

“We had a great performance defensively, and the entire team was magnificent,” Head Coach John Daly said. “Most of their shot attempts came from a long way out, and we pushed forward more in the second half. UNC is a great team, but we battled them the entire way and had a great effort.”

With the triumph, the Tribe has now won three consecutive matches and improves to 4-2 on the season. UNC, the defending national champion, falls to 4-2.

Junior goalkeeper Meghan Walker totaled seven saves and earned the shutout. The Green and Gold have blanked their last three opponents and have recorded shutouts in four of six matches this season.

Zimmeck’s score was the Tribe’s lone shot of the afternoon, as the Tar Heels out-shot W&M, 17-1.

The win was W&M’s first against North Carolina, as it entered Sunday’s match with a 0-20-1 record in the all-time series.

Walker was selected as the Invitational’s most valuable player, while Zimmeck, Danielle Collins and Abby Lauer joined her on the all-tournament team.

The College will return to action again when it hosts Albany on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
