W&M Cruises Past Norfolk State, 3-0

NORFOLK, Va. - Playing in its final match before conference action begins this weekend, the William and Mary volleyball team earned a 3-0 (30-18, 30-24, 30-19) triumph at in-state foe Norfolk State on Tuesday evening.

Sophomore Bryana Carey led the Tribe (5-8) with a team-high 15 kills on a .344 attack percentage (15-4-32). Freshman Ginny Bray also played well and recorded 12 put-aways on .409 hitting (12-3-22), while classmate Cassie Crumal dished out 39 assists. Junior Jill Nowadly and freshman Erin Skipper provided 15 and 14 digs, respectively.

W&M got off to a great start in the opening game and took a 7-1 lead following a kill by sophomore Lindsey Pflugner. While the Spartans narrowed the margin to five, 12-7, the Green and Gold responded with a 14-2 run to build a commanding 26-9 advantage and cruised to the game one win. Carey came up big for W&M in the initial set, registering six put-aways on .455 hitting (6-1-11).

With the score knotted at 3-3 early in the second frame, the Tribe utilized a 9-2 run to open up a 12-5 advantage. W&M extended its lead to as many as 12 points on a number of occasions and earned the six-point win. Bray finished the game with five kills on a .714 attack percentage (5-0-7).

While it trailed 8-6 during the early stage of the final game, the Tribe rattled off a 14-1 run, punctuated with a service ace by junior Molly Bohman, to build a 20-9 lead. The Green and Gold went ahead by as many as 13 points en route to claiming the game and the match.

The Tribe will return to action again this weekend when it opens its conference slate with road contests at UNC Wilmington and Georgia State.
