Tribe Sweeps Doubles on Opening Day of UVA Invite
Junior Katarina Zoricic defeated the No. 36-ranked singles player in the top flight.

Charlottesville, Va. - The William and Mary women’s tennis team wrapped up the first day of the Virginia Fall Invitational winning a trio of singles matches and all three of its doubles matches. Junior Katarina Zoricic highlighted the Tribe effort tallying both a singles and doubles victory against nationally ranked opponents in the College’s second fall event of the 2007 campaign.
In the top singles draw, Zoricic evened her early season record at 2-2 with a come-from-behind, three-set victory. The No. 46-ranked Tribe player dropped the opening set to No. 36-ranked Gira Schofield of South Carolina, 6-3, before rallying to claim the match with easy wins in the second, 6-1, and third, 6-2, sets.
Zoricic combined with sophomore Ragini Acharya to knock off the No. 23 nationally ranked duo in the Flight A Doubles bracket. The W&M pair improved with 4-1 on the year with an 8-6 win over Schofield and Ana Zubori of South Carolina.
The Tribe rolled in its other two doubles matches as the pair of sophomore Magdalena Bresson and junior Klaudyna Kasztelaniec along with the tandem of junior Barbara Zidek and sophomore Lauren Sabacinski tallied their first wins as teams in 2007. Bresson and Kasztelaniec claimed their Flight B doubles match, 8-4 over Suzie Mansour and Natasa Vuckovic of South Carolina. The team improved to 8-1 as a pair over the last two seasons. Zidek and Sabacinski upped their career mark as a duo to 6-2 with an 8-3 victory over Mikki Jocic and Megan McGavock of South Carolina in the Flight C Doubles draw.
Kasztelaniec and Bresson joined Zoricic posting a perfect mark in both singles and doubles on the day. Kasztelaniec improved to 4-1 on the season with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Vuckovic in the Flight C Singles Bracket. Bresson rebounded after dropping the first set, 6-4, to claim the final two, 6-2, 6-2, on the way to her fourth straight win to open the 2007 season. The W&M sophomore downed Mansour in the Flight D Singles draw.
W&M will return to action at the UVa Fall Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 22. Play on Saturday will begin at 10 a.m. at the Snyder Tennis Center. The event will conclude on Sunday at 9 a.m. Admission to the Invitational is free.
