Tribe Extends Winning Streak With a 3-1 Victory at Georgia State

ATLANTA, Ga. - The William and Mary volleyball team improved to 2-0 in conference play with a 3-1 (30-15, 27-30, 30-23, 30-17) victory at Georgia State on Saturday evening. With the win, the Tribe (7-8, 2-0) extends its winning streak to three.

Sophomore Lauren Powell recorded a team-high 15 kills on .545 hitting (15-3-22), while junior Molly Bohman totaled eight put-aways on a .438 attack percentage (8-1-16). Freshman Erin Skipper also came up big with 10 kills, and classmate Ginny Bray had seven total blocks. Junior Kim Mount registered a double-double with 45 assists and 10 digs.

The College got off to a great start in the initial game, as it utilized an 11-1 run to build a comfortable 15-4 advantage. GSU was unable to get closer than seven the rest of the way, and the Tribe cruised to the lopsided game one win. As a team, W&M finished with a .324 hitting percentage (18-7-34) in the opening set.

Unlike the opening frame, the second game was tightly contested. With the score knotted at seven, the Panthers rattled off five straight points to go ahead, 12-7. While Georgia State extended its lead to six, the Tribe charged back with an 8-2 run to tie the score at 18. The count was still knotted late in the game, 27-27, but the Panthers tallied the final three points to even the contest at one game apiece.

The Tribe recorded five unanswered points early in the third game to take a 7-2 advantage. While GSU narrowed the gap to three shortly thereafter, the Green and Gold countered with a 7-2 run to push the lead to eight, 19-11. Although the Panthers gradually worked their way back and cut the deficit to four, 23-19, the College regained control of the game after a timeout and claimed the set, 30-23.

W&M quickly took control of the final game, as it tallied six of the first seven points. While the Tribe extended the advantage to seven, 10-3, following a kill by Skipper, GSU charged back with a 7-1 run to cut the margin to just one. The Green and Gold answered the challenge, however, and registered five consecutive points to go ahead 16-10. The Panthers briefly cut the gap to four, but W&M broke open the game with a 7-1 run and closed out the set and the match.

The Tribe will be in action again when it hosts VCU on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
