Tribe Wraps up UVA Fall Invitational

Charlottesville, Va. - The William and Mary women’s tennis team wrapped up the UVA Fall Invitational on Sunday. Juniors Katarina Zoricic and Klaudyna Kasztelaniec were recognized at the Invitational for their play in singles, while the W&M duo of Zoricic and sophomore Ragini Acharya were honored in doubles.

Zoricic shared the top spot in the Flight A singles draw, following her first defeat of the tournament to No. 48-ranked Kellie Schmitt of Marshall. Earlier in the tournament, Zoricic, who is ranked No. 46 nationally, upset No. 36-ranked Gira Schofield of South Carolina in three sets. Schmitt, Schofield and Zoricic shared the top spot after garnering 24 points each with a pair of victories.

Kasztelaniec completed an unblemished mark at the UVA Fall Invite to garner the top spot in Flight C Singles. The Krakow, Poland native downed Thaddea Lock of Marshall, 6-0, 6-3, to up her season record to 6-1.

Acharya and junior Barbara Zidek tallied their second singles victories of the tournament in the Flight B and Flight E draws, respectively. Acharya rallied from a set deficit to defeat Marshall’s Karolina Soor in three sets, 3-6, 6-2, 7-5, to improve to 4-2 on the season. Zidek also needed three sets before dispatching Jessica Keener of Marshall, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2.

The W&M duo of Acharya and Zoricic took the top honor in the Flight A Doubles draw with its second victory of the tournament on Sunday. The W&M duo downed Schmitt and Soor of Marshall, 8-4, to improve to 5-2 on the season. Earlier in the Invite, the Tribe pair upset the No. 23-ranked team from South Carolina.

Sophomore Magdalena Bresson and Kasztelaniec won their second match of the Invite in doubles, downing Marshall’s Lock and Isabell Raich in a tiebreaker, 9-8. Zidek also tallied a doubles victory, teaming with VCU’s Olena Leonchuk to defeat Marshall’s Keener and Schwartz, 8-4.

The Tribe will return to action at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships and the Wildcat Invitational. The Tribe will send players to the All-American Championships, Oct. 2-7, in Pacific Palisades, Calif., while also sending competitors to the Wildcat Invitational in Evanston, Ill., Oct. 5-7.
