Tribe Falls at Stony Brook, 2-1

Stony Brook, N.Y. - The William and Mary men’s soccer team jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage, but could not hold on, falling at Stony Brook, 2-1, on Saturday evening. The Tribe scored less than three minutes into the contest, but the Seawolves found the equalizer before the half and notched the game-winner less than two minutes into the second half. W&M falls to 3-4-2 on the year, while Stony Brook won its sixth contest in the last seven matches to improve to 6-3.

The Tribe struck first as junior midfielder Doug McBride notched his first career goal in the third minute of play. Sophomore forward Price Thomas chipped the ball to McBride, who deflected the ball past Stony Brook goalkeeper Dawid Ditrich to give W&M the early lead.

After the Seawolves had their opening attempt of the contest stopped by redshirt freshman goalkeeper Andrew McAdams in the seventh minute of play, the Tribe had a pair of chances in the 10th and 13th minutes. Redshirt freshman striker Alan Koger saw his attempt at the 9:16 mark stopped by Ditrich. Ditrich made another stop in the 13th minute, denying Thomas. The rebound on the shot fell to freshman midfielder Nathaniel Baako, but his attempt less than 10 seconds later was blocked by the Seawolf defense.

Stony Brook pulled even at the 22:37 mark on a goal by Maurice Brown. Mahamadou Simpara crossed the ball into the penalty area, and Brown gathered the cross. His shot deflected off a W&M defender and into the goal to knot the score at one. Brown nearly had his second goal of the opening period less three minutes later, but his chance hit the post.

The Seawolves took their first lead of the match less than two minutes into the second half. Simpara tallied the goal at the 46:49 mark off assists from Mark Secko and Mihailo Pavlisin to push Stony Brook ahead 2-1.

McAdams made a quintet of saves over the remainder of the second half to keep the deficit at one. The Palm Harbor, Fla., native stopped a pair of attempts from Simpara in the 66th minute. McAdams made three more saves in the 78th, 84th and 90th minutes to keep the Seawolves off the board.

The Tribe had a pair of chances over a four-minute span, but could not find the equalizer. McBride had a chance blocked by the SBU defense at the 72 minute mark, before reserve striker Nathan Belcher headed a cross wide of the Seawolf goal in the 76th minute of play.

Koger nearly found the equalizer for the Tribe in the 89th minute, but he was denied by Ditrich. The Tribe garnered a corner kick opportunity less than 30 seconds later, but a shot from freshman Michael DiNuzzo was blocked by the defense.

Stony Brook held the shot advantage, 14-11, including a 9-4 cushion in the second half. W&M attempted the only two corner kicks of the game. McAdams finished with seven saves in net for the College.

The Tribe will return to action when it opens the Colonial Athletic Association portion of its schedule at home on Oct. 5. The College will host Hofstra on Friday, Oct. 5, at 7 p.m., before facing Northeaster on Sunday, Oct. 7, at 1 p.m.
