Tribe Defeats Delaware, 2-1

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The William and Mary women’s soccer team improved to 2-0 in conference play with a 2-1 victory against Delaware on Sunday afternoon in Williamsburg. With the win, W&M has now won six of its last seven contests and owns a 7-3 record, while the Blue Hens fall to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in league action.

While neither team was able to score in the opening half, junior Claire Zimmeck put the Tribe ahead with a goal in the 63rd minute off a corner kick by junior Meredith Brown. It was Zimmeck’s seventh goal of the season, all of which she has registered in the last eight matches.

The Green and Gold increased its lead to 2-0 less than 10 minutes later when junior Danielle Collins put a header into the left side of the net off another corner kick by Brown. The score was Collins’ third goal of the season, while Brown tallied her team-leading fourth assist.

Delaware’s only goal came in the 76th when Caitlyn Germain was fouled inside the box and capitalized on a penalty kick.

W&M controlled much of the action and out-shot the Blue Hens by a 30-6 margin, including a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal. Additionally, the College held an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Zimmeck led the squad with eight shots, while sophomore Sarah Quinlan had seven attempts, three of which were on goal.

The Tribe will return to action again next weekend with road matches at Towson and George Mason.
