Junior Had Two Picks, Three PBU's in Win Over Towson

RICHMOND, Va. - William and Mary junior corner Derek Cox (Greenville, N.C.) was named the CAA Defensive Player of the Week on Monday for his efforts in the Tribe’s 27-22 league win over Towson on Saturday.

Cox recorded a career-high two interceptions, marking the first time since 2005 a Tribe defender had two picks in the same game. Cox added three pass break-ups and six total tackles, including four unassisted stops against the Tigers.

Cox’s first interception set up a 41-yard field goal, and he returned the second 69 yards to help set up a 2-yard touchdown run by Tony Viola, which proved to be the difference in the final outcome. With three picks through five games, Cox leads the CAA in both total interceptions and interceptions per game (0.60).

The junior’s three pass break-ups matched his career-high, set last year in the season-opener at Maryland.

On the season, Cox has 20 total tackles, 10 solo and one for loss, and five pass break-ups.
