Women's Tennis Opens Play at All-American Championships

Pacific Palisades, Calif. - Junior Katarina Zoricic split her singles matches in the qualifying bracket at the 2007 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships Presented by Fila on Oct. 2. The Tribe All-American fell two victories shy of the main singles draw at the championships. The All-American Championships are being held at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

In the opening round of the 64-player qualifying draw, Zoricic overcame a set deficit to defeat No. 73-ranked Taka Bertrand of Vanderbilt. After dropping the first set, 6-4, Zoricic, who is ranked No. 46 nationally, rebounded to claim the final two sets and the match, 6-2, 6-2.

In the second round of play, Zoricic fell to No. 9-16 seed Sanaz Marand of North Carolina, 6-4, 6-4. Marand entered the match ranked No. 39 nationally as well. With the split, Zoricic moved to 4-4 in singles on the season.

The Tribe will have two representatives in the 32-player main singles draw, which is slated to begin on Oct. 4. Senior Megan Moutlon-Levy, who is ranked No. 7 nationally, and sophomore Ragini Acharya, who is ranked No. 90 nationally, earned berths in the main draw. Moulton-Levy was selected due to her All-America singles status from a season ago, while Acharya earned a wild card in the draw by virtue of winning the ITA Summer National Singles Championship. The first round of singles will be competed on Thursday, Oct. 4, followed by the second and quarterfinal rounds on Oct. 5. The semifinals are slated for Oct. 6 with the championship to follow on Oct. 7.

By virtue of finishing as the national runner up in the NCAA Doubles Championship last season, Zoricic and Moulton-Levy earned a spot in the main draw of the All-American Championships. The W&M pair is currently ranked No. 1 nationally and will look to better their semifinal finish from last season’s All-American Championships. The opening round of doubles will be Oct. 4. The quarterfinals will follow on Oct. 5 with the semifinals and championship on Oct. 6 and Oct. 7, respectively.
