W&M Set For a Pair of Road Contests This Weekend

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - After earning a pair of victories to open conference play last weekend, the William and Mary women’s soccer team will return to action with road contests at Hofstra and Northeastern this weekend. The Tribe (7-3, 2-0) will square off against the Pride (8-1, 2-0) on Friday at 7 p.m. before facing the Huskies (2-6-1, 0-2) on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Last weekend, the College defeated Drexel, 3-0, and Delaware, 2-1. Junior Claire Zimmeck tallied a pair of goals in the contests, including the game-winner versus the Dragons, and was selected as the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week. Junior Danielle Collins also tallied a pair of goals, providing the game-winner against the Blue Hens.

W&M has outscored its opponents, 17-6, this season and has posted a CAA-best six shutouts. Additionally, the Green and Gold have out-shot their opponents, 146-87, with a 63-36 advantage in shots on goal.

Individually, Zimmeck is tied for the league lead in goals (seven), while her five game-winners rank first in the conference. Additionally she leads the CAA in shots (39) and ranks third in points (14). Junior goalkeeper Meghan Walker is fourth in the CAA with a 0.60 goals against average, while classmate Meredith Brown ranks tied for sixth with four assists.

Hofstra currently owns an 8-1 record overall and has matched the best start in the program’s history. Columbia handed HU its only loss of the season, a 2-1 setback on Sept. 14. Brooke DeRosa leads the Pride and the conference with 17 points on six goals and five assists, while Edel Malone has eight points on three goals and a pair of assists. W&M sports a 5-2 record against Hofstra in the all-time series and earned a 1-0 victory in the teams’ meeting last season in Williamsburg.

Northeastern enters this weekend’s action with a 2-6-1 record overall and has been shutout in its last four matches. The Huskies opened CAA play last weekend with a 2-0 loss at George Mason and a 1-0 defeat at Towson. Last season, W&M and NU played to a 2-2 draw in Williamsburg.
